Sumaiyah has regularly advised clients on both contentious and non-contentious family law, including civil and Syariah divorce proceedings, custody, care and control disputes, division of matrimonial assets, family violence, maintenance for wives and children.
A certified Family Therapeutic Justice practitioner, Sumaiyah embraces a collaborative approach to law, favouring mediation and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) whenever possible, because she believes in resolving conflicts amicably, while safeguarding her client's interests.
In her broader legal practice, Sumaiyah has acted in a variety of civil litigation matters, including bankruptcy and Insolvency matters, landlord and tenancy disputes, debt recovery. She also has extensive experience in advising private clients on wills, probate, deputyship, powers of attorney, estate distribution, lasting powers of attorney, as well as succession and legacy planning.
In addition to her practice, Sumaiyah regularly volunteers pro bono and has given free talks to community organisations and groups, raising awareness about the importance of estate and legacy planning. Sumaiyah is currently serving on the Law Society’s Probate Practice Committee. She is also a member of the Singapore Association of Women Lawyers.

Experience
- Was lead counsel in a Syariah divorce matter for the wife. Secured a favourable outcome for the wife by securing the matrimonial home for the wife, without any compensation for the husband in a highly contested Ancillary matter hearing. Also, assisted another Partner to successfully defend against the husband’s vexatious appeal at MUIS Appeal Board, which was dismissed with costs to the wife.
- Acted for a Permanent Resident husband in a contested divorce and ancillary matter, and secured a favourable outcome for the husband to obtain step-up access to the child of the marriage, as well as full required CPF refunds, including accrued interests.
- Successfully defended a PPO application for my wife, on behalf of the child, and getting the husband to withdraw the PPO application on an undertaking to not cause harm to the child.
- Represented individual clients in both civil and Syariah family and matrimonial law matters, including divorce, ancillary disputes, PPO and maintenance proceedings.
