Experience
- Areas of experience in the field of compliance and advisory matters, Mateen assisted in advising a China-based oil & gas company on the legal requirements, governance and compliance matters (including obtaining the necessary licenses and approval) for them to consider entry and establish a branch in Brunei Darussalam, and he also assisted in responding to queries made by international companies concerning legal compliance and matters relating to the Companies Act in Brunei Darussalam.
- Assisted in carrying out due diligence for foreign companies for transfer of assets purposes and identifying the potential issues which may arise throughout the sale process, which includes conducting preliminary research to identify the applicable licenses, permits and best practices according to the guidelines set by the relevant authorities, coordinating with relevant agencies and preparing write-up on the findings for clients.
- Assisted in employment matters in respect of claims made by an employer against their former employees for breach of employment contracts. The work involved reviewing employment contracts to identify the key issues, facilitating negotiations between parties, and proposing settlement to achieve a favorable outcome.
- Assisted in a debt recovery matter involving a reputable property management company that manages multiple shop units in the city centre. The client faced issues relating to unpaid rent by former tenants. Separately, Mateen also dealt with recovery of debts involving unpaid utility bills.
