Wai Chong is a Partner in the Banking and Finance Group.
One of his main practice areas is banking and finance. He acts for banks and borrowers in a wide range of international and domestic loan transactions, including drafting loan facility documentation and collateralizing assets real and personal as security for lenders. He advises banks, financial institutions and insolvency practitioners on restructuring and insolvency with a particular focus on recovery of distressed real estate assets to unlock tangible value towards satisfaction of debt. Wai Chong has acted for major foreign and domestic banks, listed entities, developers, hoteliers, statutory boards, family offices and high net-worth individuals in the course of his practice.
At the same time, Wai Chong has extensive experience in a broad range of real estate transactions involving offices, hotels, retail developments, Good Class Bungalows, JTC industrial land and state land. His notable deals include acting for a listed company in the acquisition of a residential development for S$230m, advising a foreign based fund in the purchase of petrochemical storage facilities in Singapore and advising a governmental regulatory authority on creation of leases over state land for aviation related purposes.
Before joining the firm, Wai Chong was a partner in a large firm for more than a decade and he had helped his previous organisation be recognised in the inaugural The Straits Times Best Law Firms in Singapore in 2020. He is described by his clients to be a skilled and meticulous lawyer who takes pride in providing top-notch legal work.
Wai Chong graduated from the National University of Singapore and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2005. He regularly takes time to mentor younger lawyers in their work.
