Yi Siong is a Senior Associate in our Litigation and Dispute Management Team. He specializes in criminal litigation at the trial and appellate level, both as defence counsel as well as prosecuting counsel on behalf of professional bodies like the Singapore Medical Council. As defence counsel, he has appeared as lead counsel at all levels of the Singapore courts (including the Court of Appeal). Yi Siong is currently an advocacy tutor for Part B of the Singapore Bar Examinations and is an adjunct faculty at the SMU Yong Pung How School of Law.

His case experience includes:

  • Acting as lead counsel before the Court of Appeal in Public Prosecutor v Bong Sim Swan Suzanna [2020] 2 SLR 1001 & [2020] 2 SLR 1217, a criminal reference brought by the Prosecution to clarify the weight to be accorded to uncharged offences in sentencing.
  • Acting as lead counsel for the second accused in Public Prosecutor v Soh Chee Wen [2020] 3 SLR 1435 (No. 1) & Public Prosecutor v Soh Chee Wen [2021] 3 SLR 641 (No. 2), both of which involved novel points of law in criminal procedure. Soh Chee Wen (No. 1) concerned the Prosecution’s ability to invoke litigation privilege and Soh Chee Wen (No. 2) concerned a superior court’s inherent power to stay criminal proceedings for abuse of process.
  • Being appointed as Young Amicus Curiae by the High Court in Cheong Wei Chang v Lee Hsien Loong [2019] 3 SLR 326, which involved the then unsettled question of a court’s inherent powers to restrain vexatious litigants. The Court thanked Yi Siong for his “most helpful assistance”.
  • Acting for the Singapore Medical Council in various appeals before the Court of 3 Judges: Singapore Medical Council v Wong Him Choon [2016] 4 SLR 1086; Chia Fong Lin v Singapore Medical Council [2017] 5 SLR 334; Lam Kwok Tai Leslie v Singapore Medical Council [2017] 5 SLR 1168; Wong Meng Hang v Singapore Medical Council [2019] 3 SLR 526; and Foo Chee Boon Edward v Singapore Medical Council [2020] 4 SLR 1075.
